Weigel Retires After 40 Years

After graduating from Napoleon High School in 1977, Lewis Weigel worked part time for the North Dakota Department of Transportation and then at the local Cenex. In 1980 Weigel began his 40 year career with the NDDOT, as an equipment operator II.
On October 31, 2020, Weigel put in his last day with the NDDOT, where he ended as the section supervisor II. “It was time,” said Weigel of the retirement.
When he first started with the DOT, Weigel said the employees used gas trucks with electric motors. “Now, there’s bigger and better equipment; tandem axle diesel trucks with hydraulics. They are warmer, with heat,” he said as he compared the trucks when he first started.
Lewis said the most challenging part of the job was plowing snow in a storm and being on snow and ice control. “I didn’t really mind anything on the job, but I did not like the white outs when you couldn’t even see the bucket in front of you,” he said of blizzard conditions.
