Imperials Score 34 First Quarter Points In Win
For the second week in a row, it didn’t take the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 9-man football team long to score. After a recovered on-side kick to open the contest against visiting Central McLean the Imperials needed just three plays as senior Patrick Pechtel found open field on a 22-yard scamper to put NGS on the scoreboard with only 38 ticks gone in the game on Friday, Sept. 10. The attempted rushing PAT was denied NGS as they led 6-0. This was just the first of five touchdowns in the first quarter for NGS as they cruised to a Region 5 win of 56-18 over Central McLean.
The Cougars had trouble holding on to the ball as they turned the ball over three times on fumbles in the first quarter. After running two plays CM fumbled and Imperial Pechtel recovered the ball on the 35-yard line. Four plays later senior quarterback Tucker Schneider connected with senior wide receiver Jaxcen Glatt for his first of three TD receptions in the first quarter. The Imperials PAT came up short as they led 12-0 at the 9:05 mark.
Following the NGS kick off NGS senior Kayden Sperle intercepted a Cade Kjelstrup pass on the 37-yard line. The Imperials ran four plays before turning the ball over on downs. Three plays later the Imperial defense forced a fumble and Sperle corralled the loose ball and took it to the house for a 38-yard TD at the 8:05 mark. NGS converted the 2-point conversion as Schneider found Pechtel, giving NGS a 20-0 lead. On the Cougars next possession, they once again coughed up the ball as junior lineman Trenton Erbele fell on this loose ball at mid-field. Five plays later Schneider found Glatt on a 5-yard TD strike. The attempted running PAT was denied, as NGS led 26-0 with 5:52 to play in the first quarter. After running seven plays the Cougars turned the ball over on downs on the 48-yard line. Two plays later NGS hit pay dirt. Schneider found Pechtel for a 43-yard passing route and then the Schneider to Glatt combination for 5-yards capped the 2-play scoring drive. Schneider found Pechtel through the air for the PAT and a 34-0 lead for NGS with 1:08 to play in the first quarter.
The Cougars ran four plays and turned the ball over on the 45-yard line. Four plays later Imperial head coach Kelly McCleary and his squad. . .
