Imperials Roll To Win Over South Border

The Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 9-man football team traveled to nearby Wishek where they faced the South Border Mustangs.

The Friday night, Sept. 4 Region IV matchup had the Imperials pounce all over the Mustangs early enroute to a 50-6 NGS win.

The first half belonged to NGS as after a SB encroachment and the very first play from scrimmage Imperial junior quarterback connected with senior receiver Noah Becker for a 71-yard touchdown. The Imperials attempted to go to the air for the 2-point conversion which came up short as NGS held a 6-0 lead with seven seconds gone in the contest.

The Mustangs then took to a ground attack which started on their own 30 as they moved the ball all the way to the 10-yard line on 18 plays before the Imperial defense held strong, forcing a turnover on downs at the 2:48 mark in the quarter. With NGS starting near their own end zone they went to the air 7 of 11 plays when senior running back Nolan Behrens broke loose for a 23-yard TD scamper, giving the Imperials a 12-0 lead as a rushing PAT was denied to end the first quarter, NGS holding a 12-0 lead.

South Border had first possession of the second quarter with the NGS defense coming up strong causing a pair of fumbles, which were recovered by the Mustangs, as SB was forced to punt from the 9-yard line with 8:57 to play in the half. Two plays later NGS QB Schneider misfired as Connor Kosiak picked Schneider’s pass and returned it to the 42-yard line. The Imperial defense once again stood the challenge and only allowed three plays before a Mustang punt, with NGS starting on the 45-yard line at the 7:11 mark of the second stanza. Imperial head coach Kelly McCleary called QB Schneider’s number on the next 6 plays, with three incomplete passes and a pair of running plays. The play which capped the drive was a pass from Schneider to senior Patrick Pechtel for a 33-yard strike. Schneider found Noah Becker for a 2-point conversion to give NGS a 20-0 lead with 6:19 to play in the half.

The Imperials weren’t done scoring in the half just yet. The NGS defense . . .
