Imperials Hang On In Double Overtime Win

Playing their third game within a week, the Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter Imperial football team needed double overtime to beat the visiting Mott-Regent/New England Wildfire 66-64. It was the Imperial defense which came up big in the second overtime attempt as the Wildfire were denied the 2-pt. conversion, just shy of the goal line, giving NGS the win.

In 9-man action last Fri., Oct. 9 in Napoleon, Imperial junior quarterback Tucker Schneider was part of 10 NGS touchdowns as he threw for 7 and ran for three. On the night Schneider led NGS as he carried the ball for 153 yards and through the air and was 23-35 with two interceptions for 400 yards.

Imperial head coach Kelly McCleary saw his defense knock the ball loose on the Wildfire first drive on their own 18 yard line as junior defensive back Michael Schulz fell on the loose ball. Seven plays later the Imperials turned the ball over as Schneider was intercepted and the Wildfire set up shop on the 32 yard line. The Imperial defense once again held and four plays later NGS had the Wildfire turn the ball over on downs on the 32 yard line. Two plays later NGS struck pay dirt when Schneider found junior wide receiver Kayden Sperle for a 52 yard strike. Schneider then scampered in for a 15 yard TD to put NGS on the board first. The Imperials attempt through the air for the PAT came up short as NGS led 6-0 with 2:58 to play in the first.

The Imperial defense once again came up big as the Wildfire coughed up the ball on their fifth play from scrimmage and junior Dylan Kuipers recovered the ball on the 20-yard line with 1:05 to play in the first. Two plays later NGS returned the favor and turned the ball over with M-R/NE Stetson Urlacher falling on the loose ball on the 21-yard line. One play later junior running back Nathan Kaufman broke free for the Wildfire for a 23-yard score. The Wildfire also attempted going to the air for the PAT, but came up short as the contest was knotted at 6 after one period of play.

The second quarter had both teams exchange possessions and score three touchdowns. An 11 play drive which originated at midfield had Schneider find junior wide receiver Blaise Bitz on an 8 yard passing route. Senior tight end Noah Becker carried for the 2-point conversion to give NGS a 14-6 lead. Four plays later the Wildfire found 6 points when Cole Manolovits found Nathan Kaufman on a 6-yard passing play. The NGS defense stopped the running PAT as NGS led 14-12 with 8:20 to play in the half.

The Imperials, starting at their own 40-yard line ran five plays later to cap this drive when Schneider found Becker on a. . .
