City Pursuing Ordinance Change To Allow Chickens

For the second month in a row the Napoleon City Council spent some time hearing and discussing the idea of changing a city ordinance to allow housing of chickens by individuals within the Napoleon city limits legal.
During the regular council meeting, which was held Tues., July 1, Napoleon residents Rusty and Andie Johnson addressed council members with information in regards to having chickens on their city property. The couple is currently tending to four chickens.
The discussion started over a month ago when city officials realized the Johnsons had chickens, and that they’ve had them for over a year. Upon the discovery, council members at last month’s meeting felt the Johnsons were violating current city ordinance.
The Johnsons addressed city council members, Rod Kleppe, Bob Humann, Rich Bjerklie, Mike Heying, Clark Haas, John Wald and Mayor Todd Moos last week, urging them to reconsider their decision.
Johnsons provided 10 pages of written documents on what is required and how the fowl should be taken care of to minimize any disruption to area neighbors.
